What is Summer Reading & Learning, and why do we do it?
Summer Reading & Learning is a program the library offers each year. The theme changes, but each year we give books and prizes to kids who turn in reading logs to the library; host special events featuring performers, authors, and other guests; and hold exciting programs featuring library staff. We offer Summer Reading & Learning for two reasons. First, because over the course of a traditional summer break, kids lose an average of three months of learning. This is known as the summer slide, and summer reading and learning programs are a proven way to lessen its effects. The second reason is because it helps the library fulfill its mission to nurture individual and community growth through free and equal access to resources for reading, thinking, learning, and living.
When is Summer Reading & Learning?
Summer Reading begins June 1 and ends July 31, and the last day to submit minutes is August 10. Summer Learning events begin on June 3, and the last event will be on Friday, August 2. Visit the Events tab for full details.
What does Summer Reading & Learning cost?
It's free to everyone! In fact, all library events, all year long, are free to everyone!
How do I register?
Register at the youth services desk at the library or online via the Google form found on the Registration tab between June 1 and July 31.
How do I earn books and prizes?
For every 100 minutes up to 700 minutes, kids earn a book or a prize, while supplies last. Everyone who reads at least 800 minutes will earn a book and a prize. Everyone who reads at least 1600 minutes will earn an additional book and prize. Everyone who reads more than 1600 minutes will win even more prizes! Learn more at the Reading & Prizes tab.
What is Read to Bead?
You can pick up an Adventure Begins at the Library necklace at the library, while supplies last. You will earn a special bead to add to your necklace when you turn in your reading log each week at the library. Learn more at the Read to Bead tab.
Where do I get my books, prizes, and beads?
Pick up all your goodies at the youth services desk at Ashe County Public Library. All books and prizes must be picked up by August 31.
How do I encourage my child to read?
Let them read what they want over summer break, at least some of the time. Letting kids read what they want helps grow their love of reading, and kids who enjoy reading are more apt to read and understand complex texts later. Kids are also more likely to read if they see adults in their lives reading for enjoyment. So grab a book for yourself while you're checking out a stack for them! You can also talk to your kids about what they're reading and what you're reading. These conversations will build their critical thinking and comprehension skills.
