Douglas Joseph Barber was born on July 8, 1922. He was drafted into the Army on November 12, 1942. He served in World War II.  He was stationed at Fort Bragg. He was a Private 1st Class and served as a Warrant Officer. He left the Military on November 10, 1945. His sister believed that though they had not named it at that time, he came home from the military with PTSD but never received help.

Douglas, (Dub) as he was know by family and friends, struggled with PTSD yet he was able to become an entrepreneur. He started a sanitation disposal business for areas of Wilkes County that did not have access to the cities disposal system. He received a military marker for his grave at his death on July 23, 1982.

Douglas was the brother of John Sylvester Barber. The brother-in-law of Raymond Alexander I and the uncle of Raymond Alexander II
