  • Alcoholics Anonymous
    Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem.

  • Alliance Credit Counseling
    Alliance Credit Counseling provides help and hope through charitable relief to the poor and distressed by personalized education, counseling, and support programs that reduce and avoid the burdens of financial crisis, debt stress, bankruptcy, and their consequences.

  • The American Association of Suicidology
    The American Association of Suicidology's mission is to promote the understanding and prevention of suicide and support those who have been affected by it. Their website has a listing of accredited crisis centers, summaries of national suicide statistics, and much more.

  • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
    Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death.

  • American Psychological Association
    The American Psychological Association's mission is to advance the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people's lives. Their suicide web page has links to articles as well as a "Find A Psychologist" link.

  • ASU: Blue Cross NC Institute for Health and Human Services Community Resources Page
    The Community Resource Directory, a comprehensive listing of human service providers in Watauga, Ashe and Avery Counties. Information provided includes services provided, website and contact information, fees charged, hours and locations, languages spoken and other useful information for the general public and service providers.

  • ASU: Wellness & Prevention Services
    The Department of Wellness and Prevention Services' mission is to serve ASU students through the promotion of healthy behaviors, risk behavior modification services, and advocacy for campus-wide health policies that facilitate student success and holistic well-being.

  • Befriender's Worldwide
    The aim of the Befrienders Worldwide Network is to assist member Centres in providing appropriate emotional support services for people who are suicidal and/or in distress. We do this by the sharing of information and resources in order to improve their ability to make their service readily available to all people requesting it, to develop effective service policies and practices and to encourage appropriate research.

    The Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission (BROC) seeks to provide individualized comprehensive services that help low-income families with a broad range of needs such as help with utility and medical bills, weatherization and food.

  • Center For Disease Control: Suicide Prevention
    The Center for Disease Control works 24/7 to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. Preventing suicide is a priority for CDC.

  • Center For Disease Control: WISQARS
    CDC’s WISQARS™ (Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System) is an interactive, online database that provides fatal and nonfatal injury, violent death, and cost of injury data from a variety of trusted sources. Researchers, the media, public health professionals, and the public can use WISQARS™ data to learn more about the public health and economic burden associated with unintentional and violence-related injury in the United States.

  • Community Care Clinic
    The Community Care Clinic offers primary care, case management, health education, and the following specialty care for our patients: mental health services, gynecology, neurology, chiropractor, physical therapy, orthopedics, dermatology. Partnerships with Appalachian Dental Care and Western Carolina Eye Associates allow patient referrals for limited dental and vision care.

  • Conversations Matter: Australia
    Conversations Matter is a practical online resource to support safe and effective community discussions about suicide.

  • Crisis Text Line
    Crisis Text Line is free, 24/7 support for those in crisis. Text 741741 from anywhere in the US to text with a trained Crisis Counselor. Crisis Text Line trains volunteers to support people in crisis. With over 54 million messages processed to date, we’re growing quickly, but so is the need.

    The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is the leading peer-directed national organization focusing on the two most prevalent mental health conditions, depression and bipolar disorder, which affect more than 21 million Americans, account for 90% of the nation’s suicides every year, and cost $23 billion in lost workdays and other workplace losses.     The American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) National Suicide Prevention Strategic Plan is a national initiative addressing suicide prevention, based on fostering collaborations across Tribes, Tribal organizations, Urban Indian organizations, and the Indian Health Service (IHS). This site is designed to provide resources to support suicide prevention efforts, and to help communities and individuals understand and obtain services related to suicide.

  • Injury-Free NC
    InjuryFreeNC.org provides the best science about injury and violence prevention strategies focused on improving population-level health. The materials on the site are created by a team of injury prevention experts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Injury Prevention Research Center and the NC Division of Public Health’s Injury and Violence Prevention Branch with the input of numerous other partners. The team engages experts in each topic area to ensure the latest, consensus-driven information is provided.

  • International Academy Of Suicide Research
    The International Academy for Suicide Research is an organization that promotes high standards of research and scholarship in the field of suicidal behaviour by fostering communication and co-operation among scholars engaged in such research.

  • International Association for Suicide Prevention
    Founded by the late Professor Erwin Ringel and Dr. Norman Farberow in 1960, the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) is dedicated to preventing suicidal behaviour, alleviating its effects, and providing a forum for academics, mental health professionals, crisis workers, volunteers and suicide survivors.

  • it's OK 2 Ask...about suicide
    The North Carolina Division of Public Health, Injury and Violence Prevention Branch, Youth Suicide Prevention Program works in collaboration with The North Carolina Youth Suicide Prevention Task Force to address youth suicide prevention in North Carolina. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for ages 10-24 making it a serious public health issue.

    The STARlab aims to conduct world-leading research into the effects of stress and personality on health. It is led by Professor Daryl O'Connor who is based at the Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds (UK) and is part of the larger Health & Social Psychology Research Group.

  • Lifeline Crisis Chat
    Lifeline Crisis Chat is a service of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in partnership with CONTACT USA. It is the first service of its kind where crisis centers across the United States have joined together to form one national chat network that can provide online emotional support, crisis intervention, and suicide prevention services. The chat specialists are here to listen and support you through whatever difficult times you may be facing.

    Created in 2002, the McGill Group for Suicide Studies (MGSS) investigates risk factors associated with suicidal behaviour and related conditions, such as major depressive disorder, using a range of different approaches and methodologies. This multidisciplinary team is unique in Canada and is one of the only programs of its kind in the world.

  • Mental Health America
    Mental Health America (MHA) – founded in 1909 – is the nation's leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and to promoting the overall mental health of all Americans. Our work is driven by our commitment to promote mental health as a critical part of overall wellness, including prevention services for all, early identification and intervention for those at risk, integrated care, services, and supports for those who need it, with recovery as the goal.

  • Mental Health First Aid: Australia
    Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia is a national not-for-profit health promotion charity focused on mental health training and research. It is a universal mental health program that has spread to 23 countries around the world. Their mission is is to provide high quality, evidence-based mental health first aid education to everyone.

  • Mentalhealth.gov
    MentalHealth.gov provides one-stop access to U.S. government mental health and mental health problems information. MentalHealth.gov aims to educate and guide the general public, health and emergency preparedness professionals, policy makers, government and business leaders, school systems and local communities.

  • Mindframe
    Funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Health under the National Suicide Prevention Program, the Mindframe National Media Initiative aims to encourage responsible, accurate and sensitive representation of mental illness and suicide in the Australian mass media. The initiative involves building a collaborative relationship with the media and other sectors that influence the media (such as key sources for news stories).

    Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs have become a major problem. Narcotics Anonymous uses a traditional 12-step model that has been expanded and developed for people with varied substance abuse issues.

  • National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention
    The National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention is the public-private partnership that advances the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP) by championing suicide prevention as a national priority and cultivating the resources needed to sustain progress.

  • National Alliance On Mental Illness
    NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

  • National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors
    The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors will work with states, federal partners, and stakeholders to promote wellness, recovery, and resiliency for individuals with mental health conditions or co-occurring mental health and substance related disorders across all ages and cultural groups, including: youth, older persons, veterans and their families, and people under the jurisdiction of the court.

  • National Center For Biotechnology Information
    The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' National Center For Biotechnology Information Database allows users to search several government databases simultaneously for information on a particular topic. Users can access abstracts, citations and in some cases free full text articles.

  • The National Institute Of Mental Health
    The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders. NIMH is one of the 27 Institutes and Centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the largest biomedical research agency in the world. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Their mission is to transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure.

  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
    The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across the United States. The Lifeline is comprised of a national network of over 160 local crisis centers, combining custom local care and resources with national standards and best practices.

  • National Survey On Drug Use And Health
    The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) provides national and state-level data on the use of tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs (including non-medical use of prescription drugs) and mental health in the United States. NSDUH is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

  • National Veteran's Foundation
    The National Veteran's Foundation's mission is to serve the crisis management, information and referral needs of all U.S. Veterans and their families through: management and operation of the nation’s only toll-free helpline for all veterans and their families.

  • N.C. 211
    Maintained by the United Way this site assists users in locating housing, clothing, legal and medical assistance.

  • N.C. Department of Health & Human Services: Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services
    The N.C. Department of Health & Human Services: Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services provides quality support to achieve self-determination for individuals with intellectual and or developmental disabilities and quality services to promote treatment and recovery for individuals with mental illness and substance use disorders.

  • N.C. Department of Insurance: Services For Consumers
    If you (or a family member) have been denied a health benefit inappropriately, depending on your insurance, you may be protected by Mental Health and Addiction Insurance “Parity” laws. The North Carolina Department of Insurance may be able to help.

  • N.C. Foreclosure Prevention Fund
    N.C. Housing Finance Agency's N.C. Foreclosure Prevention Fund website has information to help North Carolina homeowners who are struggling to make their mortgage payments due to job loss, reduction in income, or temporary financial hardship, such as divorce, illness or death of a spouse. The Fund also assists returning veterans who are transitioning to civilian jobs.

    The North Carolina State Center for Health Statistics is responsible for data collection, health-related research, production of reports and maintenance of a comprehensive collection of health statistics.     NCWorks Online is a one-stop online resource for job seekers and employers in North Carolina. Job seekers can search for jobs, create resumes, and find education and training. Employers can find candidates, post jobs, and search labor market information.

  • Northwestern Regional Housing Authority
    Provides many kinds of housing opportunities and services to assure affordable, adequate housing. Programs include rental assistance (Section 8), housing counseling, property management and development, first-time home buyer training, family self-sufficiency, and public/private partnerships.

    Samaritans is an United Kingdom based charity that is committed to being a knowledgeable organization. One of the ways they are working to achieve this is by undertaking literature reviews and internal research projects to better understand the key issues and debates in: suicide and self harm research, effective ways of providing support to people in distress, and callers needs and experiences when using their services. They use this to inform the development of their service and to inform their work to influence government policy. Their site contains several interesting reports on topics such as: men, suicide and society; socioeconomic disadvantage and suicidal behaviour and; how people experiencing emotional distress use different online spaces.

  • SAMHSA- The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
    The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA's mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities.

  • SANE: Australia
    SANE researches and develops resources to inform and educate the community about the impact of mental illness and to promote a fulfilling life for all those affected.

  • Suicidal Behaviour Research Lab
    SBRL has an international reputation for conducting high quality, theoretically-grounded and innovative research and it is the leading suicide and self-harm research group in Scotland. The group also has strong national and international research links and it is always keen to develop new collaborations to advance the understanding and prevention of suicide throughout the world.

  • Suicide Prevention Resource Center
    The Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) is the nation’s only federally supported resource center devoted to advancing the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. SPRC provides technical assistance, training, and materials to increase the knowledge and expertise of suicide prevention practitioners and other professionals serving people at risk for suicide.     The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for improving health care to people who are geographically isolated, economically or medically vulnerable. Their Mental Health and Addiction Insurance Help webpage provides users with information about financing treatment.

  • U.S. Department of Labor: Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Parity
    The U.S. Department of Labor's Employee Benefits Security Administration's Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Parity web page has information about the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and its implementation. Resources include publications, videos and research.

  • University of Oxford: Centre for Suicide Research
    The University of Oxford's Centre for Suicide Research translates findings about the extent and nature of self-harm and suicide into implications for prevention and treatment.
