REVIEW: Anthony and Florence were only 17 when they were kidnapped from their villages and forced to join the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda. Anthony became a radio expert and was promoted to work next to The Great Leader, Joseph Kony. Florence had planned on going to nursing school and her job was to work in the field hospitals helping wounded soldiers. Both faced unmentionable cruelty and were forced to fight wars with Uganda and Sudan soldiers. Everyday was a fight for survival as they had little to eat, could be killed by the LRA for any small infraction, or could die by an enemy bullet. They met, fell in love and were allowed to marry and have children. Finally, after many years Florence and her two small sons managed to escape back to her home town. The LRA kept a very close eye on Anthony for the next three years until he was able to make his escape.
It is estimated that the LRA has kidnapped 67,000 people, 30,000 of them children. They have slain thousands of innocent civilians. They are still active today.
This historical fiction is based on the true stories of both Anthony and Florence. Some parts were to painful for me to read. I don't think I would have finished the book but for the fact it was part of Vicki's book club. Rating and Review by Michele H.

REVIEW:"All the Glimmering Stars" is historical fiction at its best. Taking place in Uganda and Sudan during the 1990's to mid-2000's, two bright, honest, loving children are raised by poverty stricken families in atmospheres of love and happiness. When 12 year old Anthony and later younger Florence are kidnapped by Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army, they grow up in the most barbaric, inhumane, brutal conditions one could image. If they tried to flee they were killed, likewise if they refuted their leader in anyway or lost their issued guns. Wounded 4 times, Anthony becomes a radio operator for Kony himself. Florence takes care of children, prepares food, and lives the life of a foot soldier. What they witness during their childhoods and teen years - living in fear, forced to watch murder and violence - while missing their families and realizing their former lives are erased - is incredible. An unexpected incident brings the 2 together and love follows. Eventually marrying, they must endure more years of separation before their plots to flee the LRA can be achieved. Their methods of resilience are remarkable. In afterwords, interviews with both Anthony and Florence shed more light on their lives and include information on how this book happened to be written.
