Watauga Library Youth Services: Battle of the Books

What is Battle of the Books?

Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 4-8. The purpose is to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature.

Schools throughout the state field teams that participate in the Battle of the Books contest. Competitions are held on district, regional and state levels, and the format is much like Family Feud and College Bowl. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through this program, students can improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base.
