Watauga Demystifying eBooks: OverDrive for Kindle Fire

OverDrive for Kindle Fire

OverDrive has a series of Help Videos on their website.

1) Download the OverDrive App onto your Kindle Fire device. The opening screen for first time usage will show you a brief tutorial to get you started.

2) Once you are signed in, search or browse for books on this screen.

3) When you have selected a book, if it is available tap “borrow” or if not available “place a hold.” You will receive an email when the hold is available for downloading.

4) When you go to borrow an e-book, make sure you select the Kindle format. Note: this is available only for Kindle Fire HD. The regular Fire uses ePub, requiring an Adobe ID, and reads through your OverDrive App.

5) Once you have selected Kindle format downloading, you will be directed to Amazon.com and will be guided through the last steps from there. You can select Kindle Cloud reader or the title you gave your Kindle when you first registered with Amazon.

6) Your book will appear on your Kindle home screen and will read like books purchased through Amazon.

7) To return your book  go to amazon.com and select "My Account." (This is easier done on your desktop or laptop computer than on your Kindle.) You will see “Manage My Kindle” near the bottom of the menu. Click on it and then look for your book title. On the right you will select from another menu and click on “Return” or “Return and Delete.”

Note: all e-books and audiobooks return themselves when they have reached their expiration date. There are no late fees.

One may also checkout titles in ePub format on a Kindle Fire and read the books on the OverDrive app through the bookshelf.

When you have borrowed the e-book in ePub format, it will be found on your overdrive home screen, aka your “bookshelf.” To return the book, simply tap and hold your finger on the center of the book title and wait for a menu to pop up. Tap on “return.” Done!
